so i've spent the last five and a half months collecting and testing all the top globally available smartphones i've rated every single ones performance camera battery and display based on what price it's selling for and giving them an overall value rating so with that in mind these are the top 22 smartphones in the world right now from good to better to the best some of these will surprise you okay so at the back end is nokia specifically the x20 which is their affordable flagship 2021 phone and nokia's doing a lot of great stuff right now their phones are all inexpensive they're bloatware free nokia gives extended warranties and loads of software support their entire angle is sustainability smartphones that you buy and you keep it really is an admirable message but i think they focused a little too much on this at the cost of how capable their phones actually are like for this x20 their marketing doesn't even mention a single specification that's like applying to university but refusing to show them your grades and fundamentally it's because this phone is absolutely crushed by even the cheaper phones from companies like xiaomi so b minus and then we've got samsung they recently came out with the a52 which is like their mid-range flagship of the year and there's nothing inherently wrong with it it's a fun design it's pleasant to use but it costs too much for what it is it's pretty clear that all samsung's done is taken one of their top end phones and made everything a bit worse but for 500 in today's market you can nearly buy yourself an actual flagship so you don't need to make this kind of compromise do you remember the oppo find x3 pro the company's 2021 flagship that looks a little too close to the iphone for it to be a coincidence well there's plenty to like about it it's supremely comfortable for starters thanks to being made of one continuous sheet of glass and that microscope camera on the back is it's unlike anything i've ever seen on a phone before but the main issue and this seems to happen every year is that as soon as oppo launches a flagship phone it is pretty much destroyed and valued by oneplus flagship that launches a month later both companies use very similar components and materials and they are good components and materials but the fact that this phone is selling at the equivalent of fifteen hundred dollars makes it much less good for the money and that's actually a pretty great segue on to our next phone so we're getting pretty used to the idea of paying over a thousand dollars for a top-end flagship right but zte has something to say about that yeah zte they are still making phones but the ax130 ultra genuinely is worth talking about because it has the highest end snapdragon 888 chipset a 144 hertz refresh rate amoled display big battery fast charging stereo speakers really everything and it even looks an awful lot like samsung's note 20 ultra which is not a taller criticism and most significantly i'm told this is going to cost 800 excuse me i was having a whale of a time with it until i tested the cameras and they really revealed just how much progress the competition has made everything from the interface to the image processing feels really behind i'll reserve final judgement until updates drop because this camera hardware should be better than this but in its current state it's a b and that literally fits into your palm i think a lot of us thought whoa that's gonna fly off the shelves but it didn't according to research firms this phone only made up about five to seven percent of total iphone 12 sales but that doesn't mean it's a bad phone i think the reason it didn't sell well is because a the price is so close to the much bigger iphone 12 combined with b the apple has kind of built an association between their smaller phones being their cheaper phones which may have created the perception that the 12 mini was an inferior product but really it is the same speedy experience with a great camera as the 12 that i can recommend to any iphone fan who doesn't need a power user's level of battery life okay now we're getting on to the really good phones the rog phone 5 is a beast it's the highest performing smartphone i've used today it's six thousand milliamp hour battery is ludicrous actually earning it the best battery phones so far in 2021 and its speakers are so punchy that you will want to stop whatever it is you're doing and just lose yourself in them its only problem comes from the fact that it's a pretty specialized device like it takes a certain kind of user to want to carry a phone of such monumental proportions tolerate some slightly outdated looking bezels and use a camera system that feels noticeably lacking but if you are that user then bob's your uncle but what kind of surprised me almost as much as phone number one is going to surprise you is that even though asus has been dominating the gaming space for a while now i don't think they're the best value anymore enter the lenovo legion phone dual 2. it almost exactly matches the rog in specs but you get 50 more ram and 100 more storage by default it has fans built inside of it instead of needing this external attachment and somehow it's cheaper the hardware on this phone is so good for the money that they can't be making a lot of profit but it is a little let down on the software front like the camera image processing isn't getting the best out of the camera hardware you have here still though this is an a-grade phone and is also the winner of best gaming phone on the market right now okay you might remember from my best phones of 2020 video that one of the winners was a bit of a surprise the zenfone 7 pro it was just this no-nonsense combination of a great price huge battery seamless uninterrupted screen and a capable camera that can also double as basically the greatest selfie machine of all time well this is basically the successor to that so as you can probably imagine it's a very good phone but it's no longer one of the best simply because all they've done is taken last year's zenfone 7 and given it a slight spec bump and that's just not enough against companies who are really pushing still though i'm willing to bet that if you ever get to try this selfie camera it is so good that you have to smile alrighty you might remember my video on this guy the vivo x60 pro plus to be honest i've used a decent amount of vivo devices over the years and i've always liked them but i've never really loved them they kind of developed a reputation for a garish software overlay and crazy levels of skin beautification in the cameras but the viva x60 pro plus is the first viva phone i've used that understands sophistication did i just change my entire outfit to film one sentence maybe aesthetically it treads the line well between looking fashionable and looking like it means business and everything from the gaming performance to the camera performance is very close to the best you can buy and it helps that the camera is just super fun to use too it's slightly let down by a mono speaker and middle of the line battery but that doesn't stop me loving it number 13. this could be an unlucky one again [Music] fashion fruit it's the iphone 12 pro this is a great phone but the reason that it's not higher up on the list is that the way i see it it's just an optional extra to the 12. it offers a few fairly minor features like a lidar scanner for better augmented reality and a two times telephoto lens i appreciate these but for the majority of consumers the only notable difference will be the extra storage it comes with the fact that it's heavier and the fact that it has a matte finish it's basically the iphone to get if you want to spend a bit more than the base but you don't want to get the max sized one and that leads me onto the base iphone 12 because this phone hugely benefits by how similar it is to the 12 pro you know just before they launched i was using both these phones at the same time and i couldn't even tell you how many moments i had where i'd pick one off the table use it for a good five minutes only to realize i picked the wrong one up this phone is just as powerful the screen is almost identical you still get all the same ios features it's just 200 cheaper the only reason this isn't higher up on the list is that it only comes with a 60 hertz display versus 120 or the 144 we've started seeing now and it only starts with 64 gigs of storage which is going to end up being more like 50 by the time you factored in the size of the operating system so still an a grade and just above that i would put samsung space flagships [Music] there we go the s21 and s21 plus are not the most exciting devices they don't do anything particularly new or groundbreaking in fact in a lot of ways they're a complete side grade from last year's s20 phones but they bring in a lot of smaller quality of life improvements they've had a redesign that takes them from some of the worst looking flagships to some of the best in my books and in a bit of a surprise turn of events they're cheaper than last year's okay we're in the top it's great it's cheaper than the base s21 in just about every region but the us and spec wise it's more of a match for the galaxy s21 plus which is two hundred dollars more than that [Music] the best way to think about the mi 11 is there's a high-end flagship all around with the best in-class display the only potential hurdle is xiaomi's miui software skin which to be honest i like but i've showed it to enough people who don't to know that not everyone does and just above the me11 is not today milo then we've got the oneplus 9 now this phone had a bit of a rough launch i think what happened is that oneplus basically spent an entire month before it came out hyping up their collaboration with hasselblad giving us never-ending teasers about how it was going to revolutionize photography but then when the phones actually arrived hasselblad might as well not have been involved you couldn't tell and so justifiably most reviewers came down pretty hard on this but a few weeks later i got a call from oneplus they said we watched your camera comparison we took your feedback on board and we've improved them don't get me wrong this didn't immediately make it a dream camera system but for its price now it is a good camera system and even without optical image stabilization it takes crisp smooth video plus of course being a oneplus phone you get fast bloat free software with guaranteed updates it's a little more focused on exactly what the user needs with no unnecessary extras and because of this they've managed to keep to their tradition of staying more affordable than their competitors definitely a grade phone then we've got the oneplus 9 pro which is the 9's more expensive counterpart and the reason it's above it is that if you have the budget it's worth it it's basically the oneplus 9 but with all those little bits that had to be trimmed put back into it it's not quite an ultraphone but it is a fully fleshed out flagship and in my eyes the best flagship phone under one thousand dollars okay we can't make a list of the best phones without including the pixel 4a it was google's mid-range phone from 2020 and i usually try and refrain from recommending last year's options when a new one may well be around the corner but given that this is available now for 299 dollars compared to 3.49 it was launched at given that it's only gotten better since it launched and the because it's a google made phone it'll most likely still get updates all the way till android 14. i wouldn't hesitate in still recommending it the pixel 4a should not be as good as it is no part of this phone's spec sheet is impressive in 2021 but it's just carried by phenomenal software not to mention it's a really enjoyable size the bezels are nice and even and it's powerful enough that i don't think you'll be worrying about speed but as much as i do like the pixel i'd be lying if i said that that was the best compact phone you can get because that award goes to the zenfone 8. you might remember how i completely grilled the way it looks in my full review and i stand by it but that doesn't change the fact that like the iphone 12 mini this is a flagship phone through and through but unlike that phone this one has a great battery too this is pretty much the only small phone where the fact that it's small has no negative consequences so this is an a plus in my books but now we're on to the big boy phones in fifth place is the iphone 12 pro max it's a phone that providing you have the budget and the palm size it's an easy win i totally agree that it's not the most exciting phone in the world but the reason that this is still the main phone i use on a day-to-day basis is that it's supremely reliable the combination of ios levels of optimization with the best hardware you can get on an iphone means that if i want to post an instagram story i know it's going to look good if i want to send a whatsapp voice note i know it's going to sound good and the battery is going to reliably get me through any day i throw at it also this phone is so strong that it's the first i've ever used caseless i've dropped this thing enough times and seen it come back unscathed enough times that i just don't worry about it anymore the only two things that do sting a little are the fact that it's distinctly uncomfortable to hold and that it's the only phone even close to this price bracket that doesn't have a high refresh rate screen now slightly better than even that is why is samsung's top end phone i think the galaxy s21 ultra is genuinely the most refined polished device they've ever released it's a big visual upgrade over the s20 ultra plus a long list of subtle corrections which is exactly what that phone needed it's taken it from incredibly capable with mixed delivery to incredibly capable with strong delivery i like the way it looks i like the way it feels and providing you've got a hand big enough to hold it i have no reservations in recommending it and that leaves us with the best overall flagship phone if money was no object and this award is going to the xiaomi me 11 ultra i could spend 15 minutes straight just talking about this phone actually that's what i did a few weeks ago i'll leave the video linked up here but fundamentally the summary is this thing is a nuclear missile xiaomi looked at what samsung was doing and built a phone squarely targeted straight at it it takes samsung's best features and one-ups it in almost every aspect for the same price i wouldn't say it completely invalidates samsung's s21 ultra i think this is still a nicer looking phone i still think this has a more consistent camera but for a true power user you just can't get more than this on a phone so what on earth can be better than that well we've got two more phones and they're not trying to be the highest end phones you can buy but they're focused on value and their value proposition is just so unbelievably good that it makes you want to take a chair sit down and just have a think what are other companies doing so in second place is the redmi note 10 pro now for those of you who don't know redmi is a spin-off brand of xiaomi who have basically built a reputation for one of the highest spec to price ratios on the market so in this case we have a 108 megapixel camera a 120 hertz display 5020 million power battery and it's 279 this thing is stupid levels of value it does have ads in the software but you can turn them off and i mean look these are the kinds of photos i'm taking on this phone it's not even funny don't get me wrong you will know when you're using it that it's not a thousand dollar flagship but it outperforms its price so severely that i'm gonna have to give this an a plus plus in terms of value and that leaves us with number one the most worth it phone of 2021 and i guess by implication the most worth it phone to have ever released it's the poco f3 just like redmi poco is yet another value-centric spin-off company of xiaomi but the difference with this phone is that it's less about camera and it's more about processing power so in this case for 350 you get a 120 hertz amoled display you get a 4 520 milliamp hour battery but the kind of crown jewel here is a snapdragon 870 chip it's not the absolute bleeding edge you can get but it's an overclocked version of last year's flagship 865. for this price that is ridiculous levels of performance it makes the google pixel 4a look like it belongs in a museum and while this isn't google pixel quality software no amount of software is going to change the fact that it's twice as powerful and i think what makes this phone particularly impressive is the fact that it takes more than a cursory glance to even realize that it's not a flagship it still has a glass back it still has decent haptics and it's just crazy that i can play the most demanding games on the entire android platform at nearly their highest settings on a phone that costs barely a quarter of what the highest n1's do and so the poco f3 earns not just my best affordable phone award but also my overall best value phone award if you wanted to go even cheaper you can get the poco m3 pro which is fantastic value or something like the real me 8 for 200 but my general recommendation is that if you can try to spend a bit more you will get a lot more okay couple of things to mention here there's been no lg on this list because sad to say but lg has finally left the smartphone market there's been no sony on this list because at the time of filming they haven't quite launched their next xperia 1 mark iii and also to be honest thus far i have not tested a single sony phone that i thought for a mainstream market was better than the competition but open to changing my mind on that in the future though and finally i decided to keep foldables out of this video too just because as a category of phones i feel like they're much harder to rank under the same criteria okay here's something to think about for a second your location your operating system every hardware detail of the device you're on right now as well as all your past browsing history these are things that you'd want to keep to yourself right well this is how much information a website immediately knows about you the second you click on it and to be honest if it's a website Analtcoin, or alternative coin, refers to any cryptocurrency that isn’t Bitcoin, such as Ethereum and Litecoin. The price of Bitcoin has been skyrocketing lately and it’s pulling up many other cryptocurrencies with it.

Why has Bitcoin been rising in price?

One major reason is inflation and the lowering purchasing power of the US dollar. Before the coronavirus hit, the total money supply was $4 trillion as of March 9, 2020. Since then, the total money supply has risen to $6.5 trillion. With more money to spend, the price of Bitcoin rises.

Billionaire investors and large institutions are now viewing cryptocurrency as a viable investment. For example, PayPal is launching a new crypto service that allows many merchants to accept digital assets as payment. Tesla bought $1.5 billion in Bitcoin and plans to use it to accept payment as well.

I could write an entire book on the reasons the crypto market is so bullish. Speaking of books, here’s an amazing book that discusses the various ways that blockchain technology is changing the future of money, transactions, and business.

The time to get into crypto is now. But which ones should you invest in now? Here is a list of the top 5 altcoins that will create new millionaires in 2021.

1. Ethereum (ETH)

The first altcoin on my list, Ethereum, is a global, decentralized platform for smart contracts and a new kind of application called dApps (Decentralized Applications). These apps can be run without downtime, fraud, or interference from third parties.

The digital economy built by this community is booming and allows anyone in the world to use it if they have an internet connection. A few goals of Ethereum are banking for everyone (this is huge as some people don’t have access to bank accounts depending on where they live), peer-to-peer networking, resistance to censorship, commerce guarantee, internet privacy, and more.

In 2021, Ethereum plans to change its algorithm from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake. This is will improve transaction speed and reduce energy costs. Another benefit of proof-of-stake is that it’ll allow network participants to “stake” their Ethereum to the network. Staking is like crypto mining (proof-of-work) in the sense that it helps a network achieve consensus, but it has the benefit of rewarding those who take part.

As this change rolls out, crypto experts predict that the price of ETH will skyrocket. Many predict the price will be above $4000 by the end of 2021.

2. Cardano (ADA)

If you’ve done any research on altcoins, it’s likely that you’ve heard about Cardano. Similar to ETH, Cardano offers a public blockchain platform for smart contracts and dApps. It provides unparalleled security and sustainability to dApps.

The project was co-founded by Charles Hoskinson (one of the creators of Ethereum). He disagreed with the direction Ethereum was taking and decided to create his own cryptocurrency. That being said, Cardano is still in its early stages and dubbed to be the “Ethereum killer” as it will soon be able to do everything Ethereum does, but better.

Cardano is the first blockchain to implement the Ouroboros protocol, which enables the network’s decentralization and allows it to sustainably scale to global requirements without compromising security.

Another important upcoming milestone is the launch of the Cardano Goguen Mainnet. This will transform Cardano into a so-called multi-asset network. This will make it possible to build smart contract applications and tokens on Cardano. On top of that, decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols and non-fungible tokens (NFT) will be able to use the Cardano blockchain. This gives Cardano an advantage over Ethereum as these applications won’t be restricted by high transaction times/costs.

3. Polkadot (DOT)

Polkadot promises to deliver the most robust platform for security, scalability, and innovation. What makes Polkadot unique is its aim at allowing interoperability between other blockchains. This will enable cross-blockchain transfers of any type of data or asset, not just tokens.

Gavin Wood created Polkadot (another one of Ethereum’s creators who disagreed with the direction of the project).

Unlike Ethereum and Cardano, developers won’t be able to create dApps on Polkadot. Instead, they’ll be able to create their own blockchain while using the security that Polkadot’s chain provides. They describe this as shared security.

Polkadot intends token holders to have complete control over the protocol. And not only does it allow for staking, but it allows new parachains to be added by bonding tokens.

4. Chainlink (LINK)

Chainlink is an industry standard oracle network that greatly expands the capability of smart contracts by enabling access to real-world data, payments, events, and more. It does this without sacrificing security or reliability.

Chainlink provides transparency by allowing anyone to monitor and verify its open-source code, the quality of individual node operators, and the performance of its oracle networks.

The use cases for Chainlink are never-ending. For example, PingNET (a decentralized transmission network for IoT devices) uses Chainlink to enable automated payments between stakeholders. Blocksolid came up with a way to use Chainlink to hold Internet Service Providers accountable for faulty internet services in developing regions.

5. Cosmos (ATOM)

Cosmos claims to be the most powerful ecosystem of connected blockchains. It focuses on the problem of scalability that many other blockchains face. A lot of coins, such as Bitcoin, keep a public ledger that adds new data with each transaction. To maintain accuracy, the chain’s old data can never be deleted, making the chain bigger and bigger. This causes slow transaction speeds.

Cosmos fixes this issue by connecting multiple blockchains to combine their power. With this power, projects can scale quicker and easier no matter how much data is added.

The goal of Cosmos is to create an “internet of blockchains.” The deployment of the Tendermint’s Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus pool and the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol allows developers to build across blockchains while retaining the sovereignty of each chain.

Smartphones’ upgrade cycles are slowing down for a reason: even at lower prices, it’s getting harder and harder to buy a lemon. In other words, you don’t have to spend a huge amount to get something great, as a bunch of great smartphones are available for around $800. It’s harder than ever to decide between everything in that range, but for most people, our pick for the best phone is the Apple iPhone 12.

Luckily, if you’re looking for a no-compromise smartphone at any price, the choices over a thousand dollars are much clearer. If you like Android, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is incredibly good. And if you want to get the best smartphone on a budget, you can find something really good for under $500 or even under $400. A great smartphone will last you for several years (at least), have a great camera, a nice screen, long battery life, and be fast enough to do all the work, social networking, and gaming you want to pack into a day. Apple has released four different variations of the iPhone 12, more than it ever has at one time. Despite all of those choices, the traditional, regular model is still a good pick. The regular iPhone 12, which starts at around $830 for a 64GB model, is the best smartphone for most people.

The 12 has the same overall design, the same processor, the same wireless charging, the same Face ID system, the same 5G support, the same front camera, and the same main and wide-angle rear cameras as the pricier 12 Pro but for hundreds of dollars less. On top of all that, it comes in five colors, one more than you can choose from in the Pro models.

THE IPHONE 12 BALANCES A BIG SCREEN WITH MANAGEABLE SIZE WELL

Compared to the iPhone 12 mini, the iPhone 12 has a noticeably roomier display and a bigger battery — two things that are important to many people. At 6.1 inches, it’s big enough to make watching video and reading text comfortable and engaging, but it isn’t so big that it’s terribly hard to use in one hand or fit in your pocket. Battery life is also very good; you can reliably expect this phone to last all day without needing to charge up before bed.

The 12 gives up the telephoto camera that’s available on the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, but that’s something not everyone will miss. The iPhone 12’s camera system is the best you can get in this price range and is excellent at most anything you’d use it for. It also has the ability to shoot Dolby Vision HDR for brighter and more dynamic video.

Since the 12 has Apple’s latest smartphone processor, the A14 Bionic, it has extremely fast performance and fluid animations. It also has a sleeker, more modern design than the previous iPhone 11 or iPhone XR, which feel frumpy in comparison.

The base iPhone 12 comes with 64GB of storage, but as usual with an iPhone, it’s not expandable, so we recommend buying the 128GB model for only $50 more.

In all, the iPhone 12 is an easy choice for most people: it offers top-level performance, design, and camera features, while providing reliable battery life for less money than other options on the market.

2. SAMSUNG GALAXY S21 ULTRA

BEST ANDROID PHONE TO BUY IN 2021

If neither size nor price is a concern, the best Android phone you can buy right now is the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. With a big 6.8-inch screen and the best cameras you can get on an Android phone, it’s the no-compromise pick. In some cases, its cameras can even best the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra comes with the latest and best specs you can get on Android. It has the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor, which is the fastest you can get on Android. It features support for S Pen styluses if you prefer to use a pen with your phone, although it’s sold separately. The screen has a high refresh rate, which makes scrolling much smoother. It also has a huge battery that will last two days without much effort.

Samsung updated the design of the S21 Ultra, with a metal rail that curves naturally into the camera bump on the back. It is the best-looking big phone you can get right now. However, we can’t say we like Samsung’s software as much, which at the moment is a bit cluttered and features ads in places like the weather app. For a sleeker experience the OnePlus 9 Pro would be a good choice; the Ultra beats it on screen and camera quality, but it’s a good device all-around and offers a more grown-up take on Android OS.

That camera bump houses four cameras: a regular wide-angle with a 108-megapixel sensor, an ultrawide, and two different telephoto lenses. This makes it an incredibly versatile camera system that also has a ton of advanced video features like Pro modes and 8K recording.

Starting at $1,199.99, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is a very expensive phone. Thankfully, Samsung phones are discounted early and often. If you are in the market for one, it’s worth looking around for a deal before buying.

3. SAMSUNG GALAXY S21 / S21 PLUS

BEST ANDROID PHONE TO FIND A DEAL FOR

Although the Samsung Galaxy S21 and S21 Plus don’t post the big numbers the S21 Ultra does, they are still our picks right now for best Android phones under a thousand bucks. The regular Galaxy S21 with a 6.2-inch screen starts at $800 while the Plus version with a 6.7-inch screen starts at $1,000. However, both are frequently discounted with either price drops or bundles, so these are great candidates for hunting down sales.

The Galaxy S21 and S21 Plus are essentially identical phones with three differences: screen size, battery size, and materials. We’ve reviewed the regular Galaxy S21 and found it to be a very competent phone even though you could argue it’s a minor refresh over last year’s Galaxy S20.

However, Samsung refreshed the important part: the processor is the same Snapdragon 888 as the Ultra. That means the Galaxy S21 is super fast and should last more than a couple of years without slowing down.

There are likely more great Android phones coming soon but right now, the Android phone that strikes the best balance of features and price is the S21.

BEST PHONE FOR PHOTOGRAPHY AND VIDEO IN 2021

The iPhone 12 Pro Max has the best camera system you can currently get on a smartphone. Its three rear cameras — standard wide, ultrawide, and telephoto — combine with Apple’s image processing to produce stunning images, even in poor lighting. If camera quality is your most important factor when buying a phone, the 12 Pro Max is where you should be spending your money.

The big difference between the 12 Pro Max and the other iPhone 12 models is found in its main camera sensor. The 12 Pro Max has a physically larger camera sensor that allows it to gather more light and produce better-quality images when in dark or challenging lighting conditions. In addition, the 12 Pro Max has an improved image stabilization system that helps keep your images sharp as light levels drop.

But unless camera quality is all you care about, the 12 Pro Max isn’t the best iPhone for most people. It’s enormous, and the squared sides make it feel even bigger than its spec sheet implies. Most people will be happier with the smaller but still large-screened iPhone 12.

5. APPLE IPHONE 12 MINI

BEST SMALL SMARTPHONE IN 2021

There’s really only one reason to buy an iPhone 12 mini, but it’s an important one: if you want a phone that’s easier to use in one hand or put into a small pocket. The iPhone 12 mini is one of very few small phones on the market with top-tier features and specs; you don’t have to compromise in performance, build quality, or cameras with this one.

Though it’s much smaller in size than the other iPhones released this year, the mini’s 5.4-inch screen is still big enough for text messaging, email, web browsing, apps, video, and games, and if you’re coming from an iPhone 6 / 7 / 8, it will feel quite spacious. But it’s also small enough that most adults, even those with small hands, will be able to comfortably reach all of the screen with their thumb. You won’t need a PopSocket on this one.

Otherwise, the mini is the same phone as the iPhone 12: it has the same design, processor, cameras, 5G support, and build quality as the larger model. It’s just smaller and has a smaller price tag, at about $100 less.

If you prefer Android, the Asus Zenfone 8 is a good alternative. It’s a little bigger than the 12 mini with a 5.9-inch screen, and it doesn’t work on Verizon, but it’s otherwise a very similar proposition: great build quality, top-notch processor, and high-end features like a 120Hz screen all tucked into a pocket-friendly device.

6. SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 20 ULTRA

IF YOU WANT A STYLUS BUILT INTO YOUR PHONE

If you’re looking for the best phone to go from morning to night with heavy use and last through it all, Samsung’s top-of-the-line Galaxy Note 20 Ultra is the one to get. It has a massive 4,500mAh battery that keeps its enormous 6.9-inch screen going as long as you need it to.

The Note 20 Ultra is also a high-end phone in every other respect. Its giant screen supports a 120Hz refresh rate for smooth interactions; its triple rear camera system is one of the most advanced you can get; and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Plus processor and 12GB of RAM allow it to perform without a hiccup. In addition, it supports Samsung’s S Pen for stylus input, allowing you to write or doodle on the screen with a pen instead of your finger.

Although you can now use a stylus with the Galaxy S21 Ultra, it isn’t built into the phone as it is here on the Note 20 Ultra. Depending on Samsung’s plans, this may be the last “Ultra” version of the Note, too — though rumors have been conflicting on that front.

7. ONEPLUS 9

IF YOU WANT AN EXCELLENT ULTRAWIDE CAMERA

The OnePlus 9 is the step-down model from the OnePlus 9 Pro, which is itself an excellent phone. But you don’t give up too much by opting for the 9, and you save a ton of money. Like the 9 Pro, it offers great performance with a Snapdragon 888 processor, fast 65W wired charging, and something that will appeal especially to the landscape photographers out there: a great ultrawide camera.

The sensor behind the OnePlus 9’s ultrawide camera is physically larger than most and offers a healthy 50-megapixel resolution. A unique lens design corrects distortion without introducing the funhouse mirror-type stretching you’ll often see in the corners of ultrawide images. And if super-wide photography isn’t your thing, know that the main camera turns in solid image quality, too. Images are well-exposed, and colors look pleasantly vibrant. OnePlus makes a big deal of the Hasselblad color science at work here, which does a fine job but isn’t as mind-blowingly good as the company suggests.

Unfortunately, you do miss out on a couple of good camera features opting for the 9 rather than the 9 Pro. The main camera on the 9 Pro offers optical image stabilization, which isn’t included on the 9, and is useful for its ability to keep subjects looking sharp in lower light conditions. There’s also no telephoto lens — just digital zoom, which isn’t as good as the 9 Pro’s optical zoom.

The OnePlus 9 also doesn’t work on AT&T’s 5G network. (It works on both T-Mobile and Verizon’s 5G networks, however.) That’s no great loss right now (honestly, it might be for the better), but in a couple of years, this will probably become a downside. Bearing this in mind and a couple of camera feature omissions, the OnePlus 9 is an excellent device. It offers a flagship feel and performance for a bit less than the highest-end Android options and a seriously good ultrawide camera for wide-angle photo fans.

8. SAMSUNG GALAXY A52 5G

BEST CHEAP PHONE WITH HIGH-END FEATURES

The Galaxy A52 5G is our current pick for the best Android phone under $500, but it’s also worth highlighting here for its combination of features usually reserved for premium devices and a reasonable price. You won’t get all the bells and whistles of the S21 series phones, of course, but the A52 5G includes a 6.5-inch screen with fast 120Hz refresh rate, an IP67 water resistance rating, and (for now, at least) access to monthly bug fixes and security updates.

The A52 5G delivers on the basics too. Its Snapdragon 750G processor isn’t the fastest in the game but it keeps up well with day-to-day tasks. Its 4,500mAh battery delivers well over a day of moderate to heavy use. And the phone supports sub-6GHz 5G, which will allow it to take advantage of improving 5G networks in the US over the next few years.

Then there’s the typically Samsung-y stuff, including a UI that’s currently trending toward over-cluttered with the occasional unwelcome ad. The phone’s camera hardware is good, though photos tend to look a little oversaturated, which may or may not suit your taste.

One of the phone’s best features is Samsung’s commitment to providing four years of security updates. Overall, it’s a relatively affordable device with a solid feature set that should keep up for years to come.

Google’s Pixel 4A is the best Android phone under $500.

9. GOOGLE PIXEL 4A

BEST ANDROID PHONE UNDER $400

If you’re on a budget and prefer Android, then the Google Pixel 4A is the obvious choice. It doesn’t have the largest screen or the fastest processor, but it does have a clean version of Android that’s guaranteed to get software updates for at least three years. It only comes in one version: black with 128GB of storage for $349.

The Pixel 4A’s main claim to fame is its camera, which can go head-to-head with smartphones that cost $1,500 or more. That’s because Google does so much of the image processing in software — the sensor itself is actually quite old and not very special. It means the Pixel 4A can take night photos, do astrophotography, and has a passable portrait mode. It can’t hang with the iPhone SE for video but beats it for photos every time.

The rest of the Pixel 4A’s specs are good but not great. It has a 5.8-inch screen, just enough RAM to keep apps from closing in the background, and a headphone jack. There’s no wireless charging, no fancy face unlock, and the body is made out of plastic instead of something more premium like glass. The Pixel 4A doesn’t even offer any IP water resistance ratings (but a splash of water is probably fine).

But for all that, the Pixel 4A is probably the safest bet if you want to get an Android phone for less than $400. You’ll get better software support and a better camera for $350. Not a bad deal.

10. SAMSUNG GALAXY Z FOLD 2

BEST FOLDING PHONE IN 2021

Folding phones have been around for less than two years and have already seen their share of controversies. But if you are interested in buying one and are willing to pay the hefty price required, there’s really only one model worth considering: Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2.

The Fold 2 is Samsung’s second-generation folding phone. Its main premise is this: it is sized like a normal smartphone that fits in your pocket, but it unfolds to reveal a tablet-sized 7.6-inch display on the inside. That inside screen makes everything from reading books to browsing the web to watching video to playing games more enjoyable and immersive. When you’re done using it, just fold it back up and stick it in your pocket just like any other phone.

That flexibility is unmatched by any other phone you can buy right now, but it doesn’t come without a significant list of compromises. The Fold 2 is twice as thick when closed compared to normal phones, and its outside screen is much smaller than what you’re probably used to. It is also delicate; there’s no rated dust or water resistance, and its inner screen is more likely to get damaged if you poke it too hard.

If you’re buying a folding phone in 2020 and are willing to pay the cost to get one, you should buy the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2.

But the biggest compromise is its cost: the Fold 2 is roughly twice as expensive as other high-end phones. Since it debuted for $2,000, it’s been permanently marked down by $200, but you’re still paying a lot for the ability to fold a tablet screen in half.
